Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS)
The Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) is a renowned research and graduate education institution in Quebec, Canada, focusing on strategic fields essential for the province's economic, social, and cultural development. Established in 1969, it actively contributes to this development through technological transfer, knowledge mobilization, and research partnerships. The INRS is made up of four interdisciplinary research and training centers concentrating on key sectors: Water, Earth, Environment; Energy, Materials, Telecommunications; Urbanization, Culture, Society; and Health, Biotechnology. Since 2020, in collaboration with five universities from the Université du Québec network, the INRS has expanded its influence with five joint research units (UMRs) in various regions of Quebec, strengthening research and innovation hubs across the province.
With nearly 165 professors, the INRS attracts graduate students who contribute to fundamental and applied research in strategic societal areas. There are currently 26 faculty members with planned or active involvement in Arctic research, a significant portion of whom are already actively engaged, along with their students and research professionals. Students choose INRS for its commitment to excellence in research, its emphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusive practices, and the opportunity to collaborate within interdisciplinary teams tackling complex societal challenges from diverse perspectives. The INRS is also a leader in supporting research partnerships through its Strategic Partnerships and Innovation Support Service, which promotes collaborative projects, entrepreneurship, and knowledge transfer. It is the only Canadian institution offering a credited program in knowledge mobilization and transfer. Recognized for its research intensity, the INRS ranks first in Canada and is a global leader in sustainable development research, highlighting its role as a key player in scientific training and partnerships.
