Centre for Climate Repair, University of Cambridge

The Centre for Climate Repair (CCR) was founded in 2018 and is currently based at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge.

CCR is the only Cambridge centre focused on repair and removal, and acts as a hub to bring together academics, researchers and relevant businesses from around the world to collaborate on research and innovation focusing on: Reducing emissions, Removing greenhouse gases, and Refreezing the Arctic (the 3 Rs.)

The research projects it supports are potential tools for repairing the climate system and its aim is to advance research so the world has a clear idea of the costs, benefits, and risks of using each approach. The Centre works to establish a suite of well-researched methods so as to advance projects from basic concepts to full-scale deployment.

As part of one of the world’s foremost research institutions, the Centre for Climate Repair is mission-driven and prioritises projects that:

  • Have the potential to remove at least 1 gigaton of CO2 from the atmosphere per year (or have an equivalent impact on the climate)
  • Can be rolled out at scale within the next five to ten years
  • Focus on areas underserved by the current research landscape
  • Leverage the existing skills and strengths of Cambridge researchers

Applying climate repair at scale means working with affected communities, governments, and world leaders on policy and social acceptability. Not only does the Centre of Climate Repair have its own Research Advisory Board made up of various voices from experts and affected community representatives but it also ensures each individual research project considers its wider impact as a critical component.
