In a world of mounting multi-crises—climate change, great power rivalries, migration, energy challenges, and a rapidly warming Arctic—Europe stands at a critical crossroads. The Academy welcomes critical analyses, discussions, and empirical research exploring Europe's role amid environmental catastrophe, militarisation, global shifts, and questions about democracy, Indigenous rights, and future security.

Suggested topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Europe's position between Africa, the Middle East, Russia, and the Arctic.

  • Legacies of colonialism in the North.

  • Europe’s foreign policy independence or dependence on the US.

  • Indigenous peoples’ perspectives (Sámi, Inuit).

  • Climate action, environmental security, and the European Green Deal.

  • Arctic stability and the future of European cooperation.

  • Cybersecurity and the digital frontlines in Europe.

The Academy uses an open dialogue approach, blending scientific and Indigenous knowledge and fostering a rich, participatory environment for PhD candidates, post-docs, and advanced Master’s students.
In 2025, participants will again engage in a role-playing game simulating international negotiations on Europe's and the Arctic's future—an exciting and educational experience!

The registration fee is 575€, covering accommodation, transportation, and some meals during the travelling symposium, payable in two instalments.
The Academy is co-organised by leading Arctic research institutions, including the Northern Policy Society, University of Lapland, Stockholm University, University of Bergen, and more, in cooperation with the UArctic Thematic Network on Geopolitics and Security.

Deadline for applications: 8 May 2025
