This year marks the 40th anniversary of Nunavut Sivuniksavut – an Inuit-led post-secondary program based in Ottawa and a member of UArctic since 2004. After launching in 1985, Nunavut Sivuniksavut has grown from a small program to an accredited institution offering one- and two-year Inuit Studies programs. Courses focus on Inuit history, land claims, government relations, and community development, providing students with an educational experience that reflects Inuit knowledge, values, and lived realities.
Nunavut Sivuniksavut’s innovative work was recently highlighted in a CBC feature that shared the life-changing impact of their work on two recent students: Nivi Rosing from Nuuk, Greenland, and Charmaine Kasaluak from Baker Lake, Nunavut.
Nunavut Sivuniksavut stands out as a model for Indigenous-led education, demonstrating how Northern-focused, culturally-safe learning environments can empower Arctic youth. Their graduates go on to shape Arctic governance, research, and advocacy, mirroring UArctic’s role in providing knowledge-based advice to decision-makers for a sustainable Arctic future.
