In February 2025, UArctic and Lloyd's Register Foundation (LRF) announced the recipients of five research fellowships, funded by the Foundation through our new joint initiative "Maritime Safety: Learning from the Past to Address Challenges to the Safety of Peoples in the Arctic".
One of the funded projects is "Impact of Marine Heatwaves on Sea Ice for Arctic Navigational Safety", delivered by Dr Bahareh Kamranzad, Chancellor's Fellow at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, United Kingdom.
In her blog post published by LRF, Dr Kamranzad talks about marine heatwaves and their effect on Arctic sea ice, the implications of disappearing sea ice and why we should care, and how her UArctic x LRF Fellowship project will help inform policy and improve safety.
