Call for UArctic Higher Education member institutions
The goal is to identify 4 finalists that will be selected to represent UArctic at the international science popularization contest during the Arctic Circle Assembly held on October 16-18, 2025 in Reykjavik, Iceland.
UArctic will grant selected 4 students each up to 1000€, which can be used for airfare, accommodation, and participation fee during the Arctic Circle Assembly.
PhD students from all UArctic HEI member institutions are eligible to apply. Another 5 finalists representing Québec, Canada, will also be present in Reykjavik.

Please submit the application here by June 26, 2025. The language of applications is English.
The application includes:
- Applicant’s name and email address, name of the sending UArctic member university, name of the PhD topic, name of supervisor, expected year of graduation
- Motivation letter
- Letter of recommendation from the PhD thesis supervisor
- A black and white headshot (square pictures are preferred) and a short bio (100 – 150 words)
- 300-word abstract of the topic/presentation
UArctic will make the selection from the applications (including the other mandatory attachments) received by the deadline. The results will be shared with the applicants in mid-late August 2025.
The finalists will present their northern research project in five minutes on the joint day of UArctic and the Arctic Circle. The language of the presentations is English.
Presentation instructions:
- The presentation must be 5 minutes long
- The presentation must be accompanied by visual aid (such as PowerPoint) comprising a maximum of 10 slides without animations
- The presentation and visual aid must be produced in English
- Using a prop during the presentation is permitted. However, the prop should not be a central element of your presentation and should be used in a way that supports your points
- The presentation must be conducted by the applicant in person
UArctic aims at an overall balance with the group’s selection on areas of northern research, geographical distribution, as well as gender balance. A committee consisting of UArctic’s leadership will select the four finalists who will be invited to present their project in Iceland. UArctic strongly encourages students with an Indigenous background to apply.
