In the final session of the 2025 UArctic Assembly, member representatives approved several key decisions and welcomed new leadership and initiatives that reflect the continued evolution of UArctic’s collaborative mission.
One of the most anticipated decisions of the day was the endorsement of new UArctic Thematic Networks for 2025. Following presentations from applicants and the Thematic Networks Office, members voted to formally approve the creation of:
-
Thematic Network in the Environmental Humanities, hosted by UiT – The Arctic University of Norway
-
Network for Terrestrial Biodiversity Monitoring, hosted by University of Oulu, Finland
-
Thematic Youth Network, hosted by Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada
The Assembly also granted full endorsement to two Thematic Networks that successfully completed their provisional period:
-
Thematic Network on Nordic Snow Network (NordSnowNet), hosted by the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Finland
-
Thematic Network on Sustainable Strategies for Waste Removal and Restoration of Arctic Mine Waste Areas (RAMWA), hosted by the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Norway
The Assembly also elected Christina Storm Mienna from Umeå University as the new Assembly Secretary. Eeva-Liisa Rasmus-Moilanen from Sámi Education Institute was selected to join the Nominations Committee.
In a moment of gratitude, the Assembly acknowledged and thanked Robert Sauvé and Lena Maria Nilsson for their many years of service. Both were invited to join the Friends of UArctic.
