In February 2025, UArctic and Lloyd's Register Foundation (LRF) announced the recipients of five research fellowships, funded by the Foundation through our new joint initiative "Maritime Safety: Learning from the Past to Address Challenges to the Safety of Peoples in the Arctic".
One of the funded projects is "Managing Risk: Rescue Capability Assessment for Cruise Ship Accidents in the Nordic Arctic", led by Dr Dewan Ahsan, Professor at the Department of Business and Sustainability at the University of Southern Denmark.
In his blog post published by LRF, Dr Ahsan highlights rising cruise traffic in the High North and the complex challenges this poses for rescue operations, ranging from harsh conditions to limited infrastructure. He also outlines how his project aims to address a critical knowledge gap in Arctic cruise ship safety by examining how Nordic Arctic nations – Norway, Denmark (Greenland), and Iceland – assess and manage the risks associated with cruise tourism.
